  • Chris Bird gave an enthusiastic presentation of plants to include in a white garden, or to accompany other planting schemes.  Write up here ;

  • Please ask family and friends if they would like to join us on our Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival outing on 5 July.  Limited spaces available.  Anyone signed up, please pay asap to secure your place.

  • The Brackenwood exclusive visit on 15 June from 2pm is open for signing up and payment.  £8 per adult which includes a cream tea.  We do need to finalise numbers at the end of May.

  • Planning for our Summer Social on 3 August is underway.  We will be holding a horse racing evening with fish and chip supper.  Sign up sheets will be available at our monthly meetings.

  • The Spring Show was a great success with 157 visitors, up 46% on last year.  We also had 8 new members sign up!  Thanks all for entering! 

  • HOT OFF THE PRESS : We have booked for our pre-Christmas dinner on Saturday 16th November at the Crane Valley Golf Club.  £28.95 per person.  Sign up sheets will be available shortly, but please keep the date free!

  • Chaldicott Barns Spring Fair on 27 April 2024 – 10am to 3pm - an invitation to a free ‘gardening’ event that covers both the cultivated garden and the wilder outdoor space. Nurture & Nature is a specially curated market stall area.  Plants, garden metalwork, botanical products, food and drink, books, tools etc.  Advice on hand from garden designer, arboriculture specialist and ecological consultants.  Chaldicott Barns are converted farm buildings in a wonderful, landscaped setting just 3 miles north of Shaftesbury. There is a deli and café on site with delicious hot and cold meals and drinks, and a cold cheese room for real cheese lovers.

  • Spring Plant Fair – Sat 20 April 10-2 at the Walled Garden, Moreton near Dorchester. Large gathering of plant nurseries, growers, and garden enthusiasts, along with family fun, food, blacksmiths, professional advice and more!  We have been offered a group discount for VDHS – if multiple members are interested in going, let me know and I can contact the organisers with numbers.  Either we can get an online discount code, or they will put our Society Name down to pay at the gate.

  • Mike Read talked through the development of the Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve using a professional portfolio of nature photographs from the site.  Write up here ;

  • AGM at the next monthly meeting, followed by a fun quiz, refreshments, our Bloom of the Month competition and raffle!​

  • Thank you to those who completed the Social Questionnaire circulated.  The Committee will use this feedback to help plan our social events for 2024.  We will be looking to nominate a Social Secretary at the AGM to help us plan for future events.

  • Snowdrop Days in Ferndown in aid of the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance - 10 Ryan Close, Ferndown, BH22 9TP.  A small urban garden with in excess of 140 varieties of snowdrop carefully named.  Open 12pm to 4pm on 8/9/10/11 Feb + 15/16/17/18 Feb.  Soup, drinks and cake available.  Limited bulbs for sale.

  • Keith Partridge, the New Forest RSPB Lead, presented a fascinating talk on British birds.  With interesting facts and beautiful photos, the audience enjoyed the evening.  Write up here ;

  • Our visit to the Stewarts glasshouses has been confirmed with 3 groups of 16 now booked in.  Thank you for bringing along your payment for the cream teas!  ​

  • Social Secretary - at the February 2024 AGM, the committee is looking for a new member to help organise outings and social events.  Please let a committee member know if you are keen to join us!

  • We had a show of hands at the December meeting for those who would like a lunch social next year.  These used to be regular events in January.  Most of those present would like an event!  The committee will get planning one!

  • Mr Manston will be holding his Sweet Pea Society Show at the Verwood Memorial Hall on 15 June 2024.  Please pencil in the date to support him!

  • I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing all the members in the New Year!
